March 2017 Newsletter
Our first BTG employee Town Hall was held on Friday, 20 January at the IHQ head office. More than 50 senior managers were present as our Chairman, Mr. George Quek; Managing Director, Mr. Henry Chu; and fellow panelists shared interesting business insights from the Group and the respective divisions.
Another “first” for BTG was the use of a live Q&A platform during the Town Hall which encouraged more active participation with the attendees by allowing them the option of submitting their questions anonymously via their mobile devices.
Following by the success of our inaugural Town Hall, we organized another 2 sessions; in Shanghai and Bangkok to continually connect with our employees and empower them to make a positive difference in their respective locations.

I grew up in Singapore in the 70s, a time when local cuisine was authentic and yet to be exposed to overseas influences. I was curious about how delicious food was whipped up in kitchens around the island, and, growing up in a challenging environment, my family had difficulties in making ends meet; let alone enjoy good food daily. I remember looking forward to a hot bowl of noodles or quick wanton snacks with my friends after school.
After National Service, I got to know about an F&B Operations opening in a food court and managed to clinch the job. The role was pivotal to my F&B career - it allowed me to work directly with F&B veterans who imparted wisdom on how to navigate F&B operations and business strategy. I had the opportunity to hear and learn from different stall owners as they share their life values and stories with me. I looked forward to every interaction, talking to stallholders and customers alike, to find out their feedback and how we can improve as a food court. To me, a food court can be likened to a melting pot of cultures, a replica of the Singaporean society.
This grew into a life-long career, and under BreadTalk Group’s Chairman, Mr. George Quek’s leadership, I embraced the notion that the food court was more than a place for hungry individuals to meet their needs; it has the potential to be a place of lifestyle and leisure.
Fast forward to today, I am challenging myself everyday on how the Din Tai Fung team and myself can constantly innovate to create uniquely satisfying experiences for every customer that walks through our doors.
After a long day at work, my meal of choice would be enjoying a heartwarming bowl of Teochew porridge. To me, these are the little fortunes in life that sustain me through my hectic and busy work schedule. Not only are these dishes delicious, they constantly remind me on the importance of staying humble and extending a helping hand to colleagues, friends and relatives in need.
